Albanese standing by a box with the word No on it, with a big question mark between them.

What happens if No wins?

Nothing much will change. Different people and groups have talked about their plans, so I’ll describe those below. But it’s going to be more of the same, except that a lot of Indigenous people are going to be disheartened.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has said that if No wins, he’ll hold a second referendum that’s just about constitutional recognition. Or something. He’s been very confusing and contradictory about it, and Senator Jacinta Price has said she won’t back it.

The Progressive No groups will keep pushing for a treaty, and have said they’d go to King Charles for it rather than the Federal government.

Other countries have said they’ll be disappointed in us. Just from chatting online, I’ve heard that a lot of people overseas are sad that No is ahead in the polls, but that it matches their idea of Australia being low-key racist.

Many Indigenous people will be very discouraged and saddened. The Uluru Statement from the Heart was an invitation to a shared future, and having that rejected has got to be depressing.

As rapper Briggs said on The Project, No is what we have now. And if you don’t like the way things are now, why not try for something different?
