The conservative No campaign, that is, not the progressive No voters. If they had a good reason for you to vote No, just one, then they wouldn’t need to lie. Because it only takes one good reason to justify your vote. Let’s take a look at what we’ve seen from them so far:
- Firstly, the AEC pamphlet that got mailed out to everyone had more than 30 mistakes or bits of misinformation in the No sections.
- Then we found out that training for No campaigners told them to spread fear and doubt, and coached them on lies to tell to create that fear.
- Next the Murdoch news empire lied about Marcia Langton, saying she called No voters racist. And when she called them out on that lie, they wrote headlines saying “Langton denies calling people racist”. As if she was the one being deceptive, not them!
- The whole way through, they’ve been saying that the Voice will lead to people losing their backyards. They said that about Mabo, and the apology to the Stolen Generations, and about Wik. They pull this lie out any time that Indigenous people ask for something.
I’m sure we’re going to see more bullshit from them. And it means that Yes campaigners feel like they have to spend time debunking these lies instead of talking about the positive things we could get from having a Voice.
And that’s why they do it. They don’t care about the truth, they just want to scare uninformed people and wear out the informed people. It’s like military planes and ships spreading chaff to distract missiles targeting them.
Correcting them is only worth your time if there are uninformed people around to see or hear you do it. Otherwise, ignore, block or delete their comments. It’s just a drain on your energy.
